Mike's Blog - Day 228

A weird thing from China for you today, the “Blue bean shrub” or “Blue sausage fruit”,  Decaisnea fargesii. It also has a much darker and sinister common name, so it’s appropriate I suppose to send it today as it Halloween… “Dead Man's Fingers”.

Its “pods” do look like bean pods, but inside it’s a slimy paste full of black seeds. The fruits are quite different to anything else, and have an almost metallic look to them.

Its named after a Belgian botanist, Joseph Decaisne (1807-1882) and the French missionary Père Paul Guillaume Farges who first collected it in 1891.
