Mike's Blog - Day 259

I was inspired the other day after looking at the North Korean Crab apple in the garden to go and see if there were some wild native crab apple trees down the lane from the Botanic Garden. I was sure we had some as I’d found them a good few years ago with an Archaeology student who needed to find some for a foraging experiment.

On the way I found several “apples” on a tree, but not on an apple tree, on an oak.

These are “Oak Apples Galls”, caused by a parasitic wasp.

You might recall these have been mentioned before, as one of the natural things that can be used to make ink, Day 224.

The hunt for the wild crab continued…
