Mike's Blog - Day 28

A boot full of Fritillaria! These have many common names, “Snakes Head Fritillaria”, “chequered lily” and a new one to me, “drooping tulip”, which makes sense as the flowers are upside down if you think about it.

They are also sometimes called “Leper lilies”, their bell shaped flowers reputed too resemble the small bells Lepers would carry in medieval times to warn people of their presence.

Bonus one too. We had the crown imperial fritillaria on day 18, the yellow one, but I spotted one of the red (“rubra”) ones in flower on Saturday.
