Mike's Blog - Day 280

Winged Prickly Ash for you today, Zanthoxylum planispinum on the Japanese bank.

Prickly is perhaps an understatement, but the leaves do resemble those of ash trees.

Its other name is Szechuan Pepper and the berries are one of the ingredients of “Chinese five-spice”.

So it might be worth getting a few, drying them out or roasting them a bit and grinding them down to see what they are like. I tried them raw and they certainly had a zing to them and left my mouth a bit numb.
