Mike's Blog - Day 81

I realise I mentioned our old monkey puzzle on Day 52 but not sure if I sent a picture of it.

The old Rhododendrons around it are in flower now, also the Embothrium I mentioned. This is the Chilean fire bush or Chilean flame flower. This is a plant that’s not really hardy enough to survive “up North”, and we did think we lost it once but it re-grew from its base. Now it’s tall and more woody, it seems to be fine.

Here is a close-up.

The monkey puzzle is not looking too well actually, and if you give it a knock there is a place on the trunk which is sounding a bit hollow. I think if we cut off all of its dead branches it would look pretty much bare. Hopefully the crown is ok and it will keep going for a few more years yet.
