Mike's Blog - Day 82

What a difference in the weather. Some of the sheep are shivering!

Something from our Australian collection today, Prostanthera cuneata, the alpine mint bush.

Here is a close-up.

The foliage is the real star here though, its minute leaves are very aromatic. It doesn’t smell like garden mint, more of a soft sweet spearmint smell.  It’s a small evergreen shrub rather than a suckering mint. This is one of the most hardy ones out of the 60+ or so other species, some of which grow in rainforests. All are native to Australia however.

Hardy to about  -5c, but its planted on a raised wall so it’s probably very dry for its roots in winter which will help, but certainly a plant we would lose if we got much lower temperatures.
